𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 “𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿” 𝗗𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿:by Arielle Jacobs. I sat across from my 95 year old Lolo (Grandpa) Julio.“I’m going to play Imelda Marcos.”He responded with two words -“𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿”. On Broadway, Women usually don’t get to play The Dictator. We are often asked to play characters who are Polite, Fragile, Broken, and Soft…But also, ideally, “hot” at the same time. As an 𝘼𝙨𝙞𝙖𝙣 Woman: We are often asked to play roles where we are 𝘴𝘶𝘣𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦. Meek. Quiet. Fragile. But also, somehow, “hot” at the same time． Princesses in a tower…waiting for the hero to come save us from The Dragon.So, as an Asian Actress, it was thrilling to play not the Princess…But the 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻.Not the “Wife of a Dictator”.The Dictator herself.History has 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 “Strong Man” Dictator.Men play them all the time.Macbeth.Caesar.People who 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 of themselves as a “Strong Father” to their country. In my preparation to play Imelda Marcos…I realized that she was a “𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳” Dictator. Someone who took with both Hands while saying “It’s because I love you so much”. Someone who believed that the people needed a “Star” figure to look up to in order to inspire them. “Here Lies Love” is what she asked to be put on her tombstone. I took a line in that song as a key.She says “Is it a sin to love too much? Is it a sin to care? I do it all for you. How can it be unfair?” So, in her mind, anything she did was thus justified. Nothing could be unfair. It was a fascinating, and sometimes painful, journey to dive deep into the psyche & soul of a person who has devastated so many of my people. Since the beginning, Men have been able to play complex, ambitious, powerful roles. Unburdened by any need to “appear likable” as those characters which explore the darkest parts of the human psyche. I hope that this is the beginning of the SHATTERING of the glass ceiling for the kinds of roles that ALL women are allowed to play on the American stage.It is time.📸 @gelosaurus @murphymade @evzmm @billybcreative ... Happy 10 year anniversary to a show that granted way more than 3 wishes of mine…🧞‍♂️ @aladdin !Aladdin has always been a point of Filipino pride, & Asian pride in general, because, of course, the original singing voice of Princess Jasmine is the great Lea Salonga (who many of you know was my inspiration).Because Lea did everything… I knew I could do anything.Then, when it was time for ALADDIN to come to Broadway - my Brother, @adamjacobsnyc the mighty, shattered barriers as the original Aladdin in ALADDIN on Broadway.And then, after he left, I had the honor of joining the show as the first ever Filipina to play Princess Jasmine on Broadway.To me, it felt like such a beautiful legacy of Filipino artistry to carry on.From Lea as Jasmine in the movie, to Adam as Aladdin on Broadway, to me as Jasmine on Broadway.Jasmine taught me….- That it’s important to speak up when things don’t feel right.- To stand, unafraid, in the center of your power.- To treat all people as equals, regardless of socioeconomic status…- To never judge a book by its cover, because our souls and dreams of our future are clearer indicators of our truest selves than our past or circumstances…Jasmine stands tall.
